Do you have more than one identity setup for Outlook? I have Outlook Express and it shows ALL unread messages (no matter what identity has messages).

I'm the only one who uses this machine, mine is the only account on it.

Open Outlook Express and check in there as I believe it reads from there rather than Outlook.

You might try what Enverex posted first, but this may work if that's not it.

You can edit the registry key to set it to zero. I just set mine to 0 and rebooted; did not show any unread email. I opened OE, closed it and rebooted; showed the unread messages again. But I do have unread messages so it should have showed them.

    run regedit:

    Key
    -Hkey_current_user
    -Software
    -Microsoft
    -Windows
    -CurrentVersion
    -Unread Mail
-"Select abc@xyz.com or whatever it is" If more than one, check them all to see if MessageCount is greater than zero on any of them.

    Value
    -Messagecount

Right click on MessageCount, and select modify. Click the decimal radio button. Type in 0 in the data value field and click OK. Exit the regedit program and reboot. Should not show any unread messages. If you truly do not have any, it should not show back up again.

That reg hack will help a lot, and there are some security patches that loosely relate to what you have. Reg hack first, then security patch if still issues, ok??? One of the very latest patches relates to Outlook and Office 2003, for example. Also, check your junk and trash email folders and empty both-- Outlook has been known to do that when you have unreads in either, if they somehow do not get marked read on delete or move with a junk mail filter..... You could also see if a hotmail pickup fixes, soem of the things Microsoft is doing with MSN MEssenger, Outlook, and OE in XP might relate, especially if you manually pick up hotmail (new message notification tiein).

Mr. Bill's solution is right on the money. This is a feature of OUTLOOK 2003 and, for some, an annoying one. I have done this fix and have had no problems.

    Billl's Official Solution

That'd be Mr. Gates' solution. :)

Downloaded some new security files for XP Pro - Phantom e-mail went away. ????

I copied MrBill's solution into a text file, just in case I need it later.

    Thanks Guys! :) :thumbup

Yep, that is one thing they did fix while security patching. Have had some friends tell me that also.
