Downloaded Automatic Updates And Computer Will Not Restart..

..My first post so hopefully I am in the right category....I searched this problem but found nothing helpful....
Ok...Here goes... HP Pavillion dv2000 with Windows XP Home Edition
I clicked the automatic updates on my taskbar today and after I let the computer do its "Restart Now" bit it rebooted to the initial windows loading screen (with black background and green moving loading indicator)
immediately it hits a blue screen too fast to read the text and reboots...
none of the Safe Mode or Normal Start or Last Good Config options work..
I have a copy of the install disk and tried to run recovery/repair but when the
"Press any key to boot from CDROM" came up it did not register my any key pressing and tried to offer me the Safe Modes etc again...
..then I restarted to try again and now it will not show "Press any key to boot from CDROM" anymore...after a few times of rebooting itself it showed it once more but then skipped past it again....
