Wireless Internet

Hi all,

I am using a Fujitsu Siemens Amilio Laptop runing Windows XP, its about 3 years old. I use both IE & Firefox and in the last 3-4 weeks the wireless internet has got slower and slower. Now it loads 90% of the page and just seems to stop. I have just done a complete reinstall of windows to see if that would help, but no go. Its the same if I am right beside the router or a distance away.

Any ideas as to what the problem might be would be great or do I need to start looking at my bank balance and upgrading.:(

Thanks in advance

Stephen.

PS My wife's laptop works perfectly on the same wireless conection.

Sounds to me like the wireless card is dying. Most laptop wireless cards are Mini PCI or Mini PCI-express cards. I'd suggest finding the maintenance manual for your specific model, seeing what interface the card uses and replacing the wireless card (if possible).

Can you connected wired to the router and rule out of it's a wireless problem or something bigger.

    Hi Kryyst,

Just tried it wired now and its the same thing. I do notice that if I turn off the wireless and turn it back on again it seems to work OK for a few minutes and then back to its old tricks again.

What kind of internet connection do you have? Also, what kind of router? This doesn't sound like a wifi card issue to me, sounds more like either an MTU issue, or a router problem. Definately need more details to be sure.

    Hi Guys,

    Thanks for all the support.
My internet is a wireless internet coming in to an Arris router supplied by my provider. I have this conected to a D-link wireless router which is about the same age as my laptop (3 years) Two laptops are connected wireless to this as well as one desktop which is connected wired. The second laptop and the desktop are conecting perfectly. I am getting the same conection if all machines are surfing together or if none are conected only my own.

I am going to take my laptop to work with me on Monday and try connecting to the internet there and see how it goes. I am hoping this will narrow the problem down to some degree

    Hi all,

I have tried out this laptop on the internet at work both wired and wireless and the results are the same as before. The page loads about 90% and it will stay there or will finish loading after about a minute or two. Any ideas would be great.

    Stephen.

Still sounds to me like a problem with the hardware. That or bad drivers. If there aren't updated drivers for your card I'd have to say get a new wireless card still. Even if it's just a cheap WiFi USB stick to see if it works better.

    Just to confirm
This problem happens regardless of the web page your on
This problem happens regardless if you are using IE or Firefox
This problem happens if you are home or at work
This problem happens if you are connected wireless or wired

I'd suggest updating your drivers, but if you can't keep an internet connection up that will be tricky, so we'll try and deal with what we can.

    1) In Internet explorer go into settings and delete all your offline content as well as cookies. Then go to the last advanced tab and do a browser reset. This may be enough to fix things. If not continue.

    2) Go into DOS (start>run>cmd)
    type: sfc /scannow
-this command will do a system file scan to ensure that your system files are intact.

    3) We'll try and repair your TCP/IP stack
unfortunately the instructions are online - there is an autofix you can download or the manual way
    Microsoft TCP/IP fix

    4) Hopefully things are working by now if not
Uninstall your anti-virus software and any firewall software you are using. Then get a program called Ccleaner run it and clean your files both temporary and registry.
