Windows 7 Backup issues

Hey I'm having a bit of a problem. I had windows 7 pro installed on my computer, but couldn't activate it because I'd used up both of my msdnaa licenses. So I ordered a Windows 7 Ultimate disc from the university and tried to just change the key. A dialogue box said I could only use license keys from the same version of windows, and to use upgrade anytime.
So I go to windows upgrade anytime and try to do that. But another dialogue box tells me that can only be done once windows is activated. Well damn.
I had the old install setup to do automatic backups and create a disk image on my second hard drive that I use to store all the data. I figured I could restore everything from that. No harm no foul. So I reinstall because I couldn't do an upgrade install even from the disc.
Now I'm back and trying to restore and it isn't working so well. When I double click on the icon it doesn't list any backup devices. Even when I try and setup a new backup schedule the only device it lists is the dvd burner.
Everything is set up exactly the way it was 3 hours ago. This is a little bit distressing. I was hoping to restore my application/settings and documents, but at this point I'd settle for documents.
