Opensource Matlab?

Hi there,

I'm new to the site - I hope I've posted this in the right place.

Basically I've been advised to use Matlab for a project I'm working on - I've started reading up on it (no programming experience - well, apart from a beginners module in C++ in uni a couple of years ago).

I'm just wondering if there is any open source version of matlab in which to practise some tutorials? I've heard that Scilab can open Matlab files, but can you also create matlab files in scilab? (That's probably a silly question!)

Would appreciate any advice :)

I've never used a matlab clone, but I have heard good things about octave. It seems that octave is designed to be able to use the same .m script or function files that matlab is.
