WD Elements Failure

edited March 2010 in Hardware
Hello guys, I was hoping someone here would be able to help me out. I have a Western Digital 400 GB portable hard drive and a few weeks ago it decided to not show up on my computer.

Model #: WD4000E1MSBK-00

When I plug it into my computer, Windows makes that noise that a device has been plugged in but the computer will not recognize it. If I go to device manager>Disk Drives, the drive shows up as WD but no additional information is available for it. Is this drive done for? Is there a way to recover any of the files on the drive or at the very least format it to make it usable again? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Open a command prompt and type: chkdsk X: /f

Where X: is the letter of the drive.

The drive itself is not shown so I used the (G) drive as that is the one that the device was shown as when it was working.

    It came back with this:
Cannot open volume for direct access.
