how to setup crossover cable vista - win7

i am wanting to transfer files from a vista to a win7 os. i have bought a crossover cable but cannot configure the pc's. can anyone assist?
i do not have a internet connection on the desktop so can't setup a wireless network

    make sure that both PC's are on the same IP scheme, same Subnet mask and same gateway.

    I'd recommend setting the pc's IP's to 192.168.1.2 and .3 then 192.168.1.1 for the gateway and 255.255.255.0 for the subnet. For DNS you can put in any set of numbers it doesn't matter.

    Once that's done you should be able to see each computer on the network listings and then share any files that are in the share public folders.
