PLEASE!!! Need help with Dell Computer
Okay, I am new here folks so please bare with me...
My friend has a Dell Dimension E510 (windows xp was added after purchase), which was working fine up until two days ago. Suddenly, we can not get online with the computer using internet explorer and that is the only browser available on the computer. We have tried everything that I can think of to get it working. We have scanned for malware, spyware, viruses, etc, and are clean. I have removed and reinstalled the driver for the wireless adapter. I know for a fact that we have internet service on this computer because I can ping websites using the cmd prompt (pinging using URL). I have tried system restore (windows) and it says that it can not restore to any date that I choose. Can someone please tell me how to set this computer back to day one. I have tried the whole ctrl and F11 key, but that doesn't work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Renee

tools>internet options>Advanced (tab)>Reset Internet Explorer's Settings
I already tried that and it didn't work. That is why I wanted to set the whole computer back to day one.
Just to be clear if you go to dos and ping www.google.com it's resolving to an IP and pinging. But if you open up a browser and try to access www.google.com it does what? What is the actual error message you are getting?
The exact error message is:
Address not valid
Yes, if I go to dos and ping www.google.com it is resolving to an IP and pinging.
This computer did not come with a restore disk, atleast a disk that says restore on it. There is a disk that says drivers and users documentation, Dell E196FP color monitor, contents: html user documentation, drivers (INF, ICM, and CAT files)
get a program called hijackthis run it, post the log and we can see if we can find the problem. Even if we can find the problem it may not be fixable without the restore disk or an original windows disk - which based on the disk you do have isn't it.
If you bought this computer new then there should be a restore disk or possibly a hidden partition on the drive that you can restore from.
The computer was bought new, but that is the only disk that we have been able to locate for the computer.
Where do I find that program "hijackthis"? Do I get it online? I am assuming I would have to download it to a cd or something to put it on the computer that is having issues, correct?
