Reinstall hlink.dll mscms.dll files

edited March 2010 in Science & Tech
I am running Vista and need to reinstall hlink.dll and mscms.dll files. I have searched the net but the solutions do not help. Can anyone point me in the right direction. The problem came up when I received an error message "system error memory dump" during a disk cleanup.

Everything seems to be running OK but would like to know how to fix it.

Thanks

    from the dos prompt
    sfc /scannow
Just make sure you have your vista disk handy because if there is something wrong it will need it.

I ran sfc /scannow and it said it found corrupt files but was unable to fix. I tried to see the results in C:\windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log but was unable to read the info.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you for your help!!

what do you mean you couldn't read the info? You couldn't open the file or it just didn't make sense?

Regardless of that though if you have system files that sfc can't fix - odds are they are infected and locked. You probably need to do a repair install.

I did not have permission to view the log even though I was running as administrator. How do I do a repair install. My HP did not come with any Vista disks.

    Thanks

I am able to make a Recovery Manager disk from my computer. It says the I am only allowed to make one copy. Will this assist me with fixing the dll problems?

it should have a recovery partition on the harddrive that you can access when you boot up the computer. This will do a factory restore back to day 1 settings.

I'm not sure if making a recovery manager disk will help because it uses existing files to create the disk and if those files are damaged it's not benefiting you anything. For what it's worth you should have run the recovery manager disk maker as the first thing you did, but hind site etc...etc...

I already tried to restore to an earlier date but I guess the problem has been around for a while. I just do not want to wipe the computer clean. This all started when I tried to do a Disk Cleanup which told me that I "System error memory dump" I purchased Registry Booster but that didn't work. They did however offer me a refund.

Unfortunately you don't have many options. You can backup your data files and do a restore; continue on as you, or some how get a windows disk for the version of windows you are running and do a repair install. If the files are damaged, the files are damaged and you'll need to fix them from a non-damaged source. That's about all there is to it.

I agree. I think I will just let it go. The hlink.dll file is for Power Point and I am having no problem with PPT. The csmcs.dll is a color match and that doesn't seem to be a problem. It is strange the HP does not provide any disks with the laptops but thats another topic.

Thank you for all your assistance. You and the rest of the group have been wonderful. I will check back often and hopefully I will be able to help other people on this site as well.
