easy way to monitor network activity level

I work in a high school and next week we are going to setup a NAS so that our admin team can run Apples Time Machine backup program over the network to the NAS. Initially we will have 5 people doing this during each day.
I do not expect a significant increase in traffic as the overall activity should be very asynchronous during any time period. But just to get a handle on this I would like to catch a few days of current network activity to compare to once I get the NAS up and Time Machine running.
Any recommendations for a easy basic and free utility to log data for 3 to 4 hours at a whack ? Either XP based or linux based is fine.
Thanks
