Make Partition Un-active... with USB/CD Boot Program

I have a computer that has it's OS installed with 2 partitions. First partition is where the OS is installed, second partition is where the restore files for the OS are located (XP Home). What I'm trying to do is change the the second partition from active to un-active so that the OS can boot up normally, otherwise in every reboot, the PC wants to restore each and every time. I had downloaded GParted USB Live CD image, burned it onto a disc but it seems a bit complicated (at least for me). I wish there was just a set of commands I could follow but I didn't any (otherwise there'd be no need for this post:confused2)
Anyhow, is there something simpler to use that I can put onto a USB drive and go from there? Thanks!
