My HP dv8000t is almost dead?

High and low I have searched the internet for sane advice regarding my HP dv8000t. The problem is this :
1. I turn on the power button.
2. The blue lights come on, with the exception of my LAN/WIRELESS light.
3. The fan takes a quick spin around and the HDD sounds like it's making noise.
4. Nothing, black screen, no motion of any kind.
I have hooked it up to an external monitor and it does nothing. I have pushed every "F" button, not all in one attempt, to kick start the pig. I have done the "battery drain" and even gone so far as to, following the advice of one disgruntled user, bending the screen almost flat upon opening.
When it comes to computers, I am the village idiot. I know little to nothing about them. I like this laptop and I want to repair it, but sending it to be fixed doesn't make much fiscal sense. It is, after all, three years old and I fear it would cost more to fix than buying a new one.
Is there anyone here that can give a fledgling computer user some advice? I mean the kind to fix it, not telling me I should just bag it and get a new one.
Thanks in advance!
Geoff

- reseating the ram
- turning it on with no battery installed, just the ac adapter plugged in
- a new ac adapter
- sometimes the ac jack is lossely connected or the pin inside is thrashed, you can get a new one and solder away http://pchub.com/uph/laptop/454-53344-9962/UPH-Tip-1.65mm-Jack-DC-.html?
Probably none of that works..you can risk getting a new motherboard:

The first thing you should probably do regardless of your end solution should be to take out the hard drive, hook it up externally to a working system, and backup. Then figure out the rest.
