Weird Windows 7 network issue, network not available on boot up

I've been having a weird issue with Windows 7 and my networks.

I don't know how well I hold with this "network identification" thing, I think it's an unnecessary layer for desktops and it adds complication, and I have a gut feeling it's behind this problem.

Basically, when I first boot up, internet is unavailable because of DNS. The network icon has an exclamation point on it, and when I open the network troubleshooting assistant, I have TWO networks: one called "network" and the other "unidentified".

In order to get everything working, I have to open Adapter Settings and DISABLE my network card and then ENABLE it. Once I do that, everything works fine until I reboot again.

What the hell.

This happened to a buddy of mine. It stopped just as suddenly as it started ... we still don't know what caused it.

I think I fixed it already:

I (stupidly, I guess) let Windows 7 install all the default drivers for everything, figuring that would be okay.

I went to realtek's site and got the latest Win7 drivers for this onboard LAN chip, and voila... it seems to have fixed the problem.

Lesson of the day: Those of us who used to have to hunt for drivers with older versions of Windows got lazy and complacent with how well everything worked with the included Win7 drivers...

I guess going to the manufacturer's websites and getting the latest drivers is still the right thing to do :D

I spoke too soon. It's still happening.

Essentially, when I reboot, I have multiple networks detected, and I can't connect to either (I DO have a proper IP, I just have no DNS resolution); disabling and enabling fixes the issue.

Hmm my dad had this problem... let me see if I can remember what causes it.

the root of the problem is adobe's bonjour.

    Hope that helps.

Do you have a Gigabyte board?

Win 7 selected the wrong set of drivers from day 1 and windows update tries to update to a non-functional driver.

I had to play around manually to load a set of drivers that actually connected to a network. I'm still not convinced that my drivers are working 100% as it takes 2+ minutes to find the network after each reboot, even with manual ip/dns configs. One of the drivers I tried had the same sympton described above.

No, I have an ECS board with RealTek on-board NIC. I have the latest drivers from RealTek.

Shwaip, I did indeed find the Bonjour service listed as an ID String instead of by name. I have disabled it; we shall see if that fixes the issue.

    Thanks!

PS: Bonjour is made by Apple, not Adobe.

Yes, that's true. I just associated it with adobe because it is installed with adobe CS3 (which is why my dad had problems with it).
