9800pro is due to show up today, and i was wondering if anyone has successfully went from nvidia to ati without having to format and reload.

if so, what steps did you take?

You should be able to do a full uninstall of the nvidia software and then install the ATI card. I did it with mine when I removed my Geforce 4mx and went to my 9800 pro and it worked fine.

ok, i just give it a shot. i'd heard that there were files still left after uninstalling the nvidia stuff that could cause problems.

Thats no biggie at all. I've done it plenty of times with no problems. UNinstall and the install the ati stuff you will be fine.

I did NVIDIA driver un-install – change cards – install CATALYST drivers and it worked fine.
You can use Driver Cleaner utility (search for it) to really remove the leftovers of nVidia driver
