windows\system32\config\system error and cannot repair/reinstall

edited June 2010 in Science & Tech
Hello,

I have been experiencing the windows\system32\config\system file is missing error for the past couple months now on my Dell XPS laptop and have not been able to fix it. I have the Windows XP Professional Install Disk, but I can neither repair or reinstall when I boot from disk.

When I try to repair, it freezes right after it asks to select which installiation I would like to log onto.

When I try to reinstall, it freezes when it is "searching for previously installed versions of Windows."

Is there any other way I can fix this damn problem?? It has been driving me crazy and I do not have the money to buy a new laptop or send it in for repairs.

Any help/suggestions are much appreciated.

It sounds like your harddrive is damaged and it's hanging while searching it. I would suggest before you try and do anything more with it to pull out the harddrive. Put it into an external enclosure (you can get one for about $30) and attach it to a different computer and try and pull the data off of it.

Thank you for the reply. The data on the laptop is uninportant as I already have an external which I keep all of my important information on. I just need my laptop to work. Any suggestions on where I should take it to get it fixed or how much it might cost?
