Having some trouble with my sound on vista

edited July 2010 in Science & Tech
I recently reformated my computer and reinstalled vista ultimate. My motherboard is a foxconn a7gm-s with a realtek hd audio device in it. when i reinstalled everything, all the drivers and such installed properly for this device but i get no sound. I have tried installign the latest drivers, reinstalling the drivers, Installing older drivers, made sure the hd audio was powered on in the bios, and that the hd audio was set as the main audio device. right now i really have no clue on what else to try at this point.

All I can think is to uninstall the drivers, if any under add/remove software, and also remove/uninstall the device in the device manager, go into bios and disable the audio. Hopefully it should boot up and show no audio devices, then try just re-enabling in bios and booting and see if vista recognizes and uses its own drivers for it, possibly reboot again, and see what happens.

On a more basic level, we usually assume everything is plugged into the right port and our cables are good and our speakers are working, but it doesn't hurt to check and recheck these things just to make sure. Also, sometimes usb headsets can confound sound issues, as my wife's fatality headset has shown me.

You could also try temporarily throwing in an addon sound card, or probably more easily plugging in a usb sound device and see if that'll produce audio. Could also make a bootable cd with a linux (like Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html)) install on it and see if that comes up with audio.

Good luck and let us know what you find out!
