Computer randomly shutting down
thefadedline
Manchester, England
Hi all,
Once again, I'm having computer troubles. :sad2: I've a feeling it's RAM or power supply related but I'm nowhere near informed to try anything myself.
My computer can run for weeks on end with no activity and it's performance is not affected. But lately, I've noticed that I can't physically use the computer for longer than an hour or 2 (consistently) without it shutting itself down. It shuts down without warning and (seemingly) at random.
I've tried booting off of a memtest disc but the computer shuts itself down around 5 minutes into testing. Also run some hd diagnostic tools and all passed.
How can an inexperienced noob such as myself single out this problem?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance!

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php <-- temp monitoring (among other things) while inside windows.
Power supplies can only be tested with a multimeter or PSU testers (multimeters w/o all the fancy options). Are you seeing any failures in the Memtest run before it shuts off?
You can also try starting speedfan, then starting Prime95 to see if your CPU is overheating and causing the shutdown.
I don't think memtest even finished a single test before it shut down.
This is the light you requested. You should pull the RAM sticks and test them one at a time, different slots, etc. See if you can isolate it to a particular stick or a particular slot (possibly both). You can also just borrow some RAM from a friend (make sure it is the correct kind for your computer) and throw it in there.
Computer currently running at 36° average according to CoreTemp, but according to the logs it has reached 71° whilst gaming. Is that normal?
I've been having a similar issue with my laptop, where I idle at around 67, and peak up in the 80s. Typically, this lappy will start throttling when the CPU reaches about 70-72 (I imagine the internal diode is reading higher, hence the limiting).
I'm going to guess C, since that's that CoreTemp defaults to. Plus, if it was idling/averaging 36F, then that's one heck of a cooling setup.
