Hey guys, I'm looking to gut my Antec 300 and put together a new system. For reference I'm currently running...

DFI BloodIron P-35-T2RL mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHZ
GeForce 8800 GT
8GB DDR2 RAM
Hiper 530W PSU

I built this rig in January '08 and it's held up phenomenally. It's still pretty solid, but I would like to re-position myself in order to stay current for the next couple of years. I use it for primarily gaming, specifically in large games like ArmA II. Here is what my friend and I have put together...

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor

ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890FX ATX AMD Motherboard

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W Power Supply

Radeon HD 5850 1GB Video Card

Up until this point I've been an Intel guy, but it's been quite a while since I was up on the hardware game so my preferences are gone. I've already ran into some flak about what the Intel i7's can do, but from my standpoint I see the AMD stuff as more bang for my buck. I already know somebody who has overclocked this CPU to 3.8Ghz on stock cooling (I know next to nothing about OC'ing).

Suggestions? Places with less expensive prices? Pitfalls?

By the way, I already have the PSU.

Thanks in advance, I love the icrontic.com forums. I'm not a regular but I've been coming here long enough to appreciate the know how you guys have, so much so that I send all of my friends with questions & problems here.

Looks like a pretty good build. There's only a couple changes I would make.

    Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128441&cm_re=Gigabyte_890fx-_-13-128-441-_-Product

I've said it all over the place on these forums, the Gigabyte UltraDurable line of boards are AWESOME. Highly recommend it (plus you will save a few bucks over the Asus).

If you're really going for top performance with that, probably want to go with the new Thuban X6 processors (if it's in the budget that is). There's two out there, the regular one is only a bit more expensive. The black edition is a little pricey but it should blow your socks off.

Thanks for that mobo suggestion, definitely going with that board.

Space wise I shouldn't have a problem fitting this all in my 900 mid-tower, should I?

Also, I still have Intel fans trying to push my away from AMD. Is it possible to replace the components I have with Intel parts, achieve a higher level of performance and keep the price tag around $800?

You should have no problem fitting the components in any mid-tower.

As for the fanboys, don't listen to them. If you had unlimited money to burn and wanted the top performance, I'd tell you to build an i7 rig. AMD chips, at this point, are unbeatable in the price:performance ratio. If you're building on a budget, the Phenom II X4 or X6 is the way to go.

    Thanks!

Just installed the PSU this morning. Corsair does not mess around. Thing came in a black velvet bag. The new SLI/Crossfire ready PSU's have more connections than I know what to do with. I'll have to spend a good amount of time rearranging cords and what not once I accumulate the rest of my parts.

Speaking of that, what ever happened to the case cosmetic/clean up sub-forum here?
