SOS - Slow Operating System
Windows XP, had this problem before and got rid of it however like most pains in the backside it has reared its ugly head once again. Start up time is incredibly long, I have been through all of the normal tricks but to no avail. I would appreciate some assistance.[

I like to use CCleaner to clean up my drives, clear the registry and also check what my startup profile is doing and what I can eliminate from it.
Recommended as an easy first step if you have not tried it.
Disk Defrag, set recycle bin to 1% (or off), scan disk w/surface scan, use windows cleanup tool to get rid of tmp files and other misc waste. Check out your programs that are set to launch in Start Up. Turn drive indexing off, also do an sfc /scannow to make sure all your system files are correct. And it should go without saying but make sure your OS if fully patched as well as all your drivers in particular your network drivers.
Then run CCleaner as mentioned. Only run 1 anti-virus software program (I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials, but everyone has their favorite) don't run any of the commercial anti-virus security suits like Norton or McAfee they are horrible at bogging down performance.
That's a pretty good list of things to go through from a software and free perspective. Then it may be a case of say adding more ram or a new faster harddrive possibly.
I'd follow that to the letter, and if that does not solve it, back up (you should be already) and then just do a clean install.
