Wireless Networking Suggestion

edited July 2010 in Science & Tech
I've recently been given a old computer with Windows XP installed on it. I am trying to set it up for wireless connection in my room about 25 feet or 7 meters away from the wireless router. I want something cheap but reliable for a adapter. I've researched and have come to the conclusion that a PCI adapter is the better choice over a USB one. I have a P4DXASD2+ Motherboard and that has 4 PCI slots and 2 USB slots. What would be a cheap but reliable piece of hardware.

I'm located in Newfoundland, Canada. Also free shipping would be a bonus.

Any and all input is appriciated! :)

If I were in the market for something today I would just buy this.

That looks like a mighty fine card, but using this type of antenna has made all the difference for me. I couldn't find one separate at the time I was looking, but many cards come with this type of antenna. I bought a whole new card, but being lazy I just swapped out the antenna, and all my problems were solved! Mind you, my router is on the first floor and the computer in the basement. This might not be an issue for you, but if the card gives you grief it might just be the antenna!

Thanks for the suggestion. Yesterday I went down to the local computer shop and bought a TP-LINK 300mbps Wireless N/G/B PCI card.

Everything seems to be going well, but I upgraded my wireless router's firmware and a couple of times now my computer looses connection for no reason and then when I click the repair command while it's disabling my adapter my computer freezes up and I have to restart it. I don't know if the driver is confused with the new firmware or it's just where my computer is a bit older and can't handle the wireless? It seems to be running fine then it randomly looses connection. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Went on support site and downloaded latest drivers. Windows didn't recognize the newest drivers/weren't on the installation CD. Everything is working perfectly.
