Generic Projector Firmware?

I recently came into contact with a strange piece of hardware. A Hasbro Zoombox projector....

It works fairly well and it didn't cost me anything but there's a small problem. It has some ancient firmware on it. Won't even recognize .avi or h.264 and tends to buffer quite frequently playing standard DVDs .... :(

Does anyone out here know any open source or generic projector firmware that could work? I searched Google for a bit but came up empty handed...

Five+ year old device. Only ever made generation of them. I think you are going to find that slim pickings. Look under Tiger Electronics instead of Hasbro. Might find something under that....

I tried that originally. That's how I figured out Tiger Electronics is a subsidy of Hasbro....

I'm starting to think of just loading some generic codecs, instead of firmware, into it and see what happens. Hopefully not bricking it ....
