Need help to get my games to work on Windows 7

edited July 2010 in Science & Tech
Heya.
I got my new computer about a month ago with windows 7 home edition. Now I was dancing on clouds at that point but now I am not sure if it was so great after all.

You see, not all my games work on my computer, but also I am no 100% sure if it is because of the os or not. Although I can't think of anything else.

Now Wow worked just fine. No errors except for that when I patch, it always s
stops at 70%. But then all I do is to put in the installer disc and it works just fine.

Now the games with problems is for example my Battle for middle earth. The first one, not any expansion. When I put in the cd to install the game It works just fine to round about 80% (not sure if I remember right) when it says: Could not copy the file (bla bla bla. I know it was a movie, probably one shown when you succeed at a mission). Then my only opportunity is to press okay witch cancels the whole install.

Also Steam. When I try to install steam it works just fine until when I start it and Steam updates come forth. It always stop on 24% and no matter how long I wait it won't continue.

I am crying blood here people, can anyone help me sort this out?

The Steam issues shouldn't be a problem with Win 7. Nobody who runs Win 7 here has any problems with Steam installing. Not sure what to tell you except to try defragging your cache files if you have any, checking your network, and perhaps running Steam as administrator.

I'd recommend the same (run as admin) for BfME to see if that helps.

I see. Well I've tried ree-installing steam twice but no difference there. Could you perhaps tell me how to run it as admin? And is it even possible if the game isn't yet fully installed since that is the case with BFME

I meant for you to try and run the installer itself as admin. Usually Windows elevates it itself, but just in case, right click the installer file and select the Run as Administrator option. It should give you a prompt asking if you want to allow that program special permissions; say yes and continue.

Well if that is the case then I run everything as admin :P Or am I thinking of the windows defender thing that pops up? Cause that is all that does pop up.

Does anybody else have any other solution?

It sounds like it might be a hard drive problem; at the very least I'd check your hard drive for errors.

Game files tend to be huge, and sit on giant chunks of contiguous space; if there's a bad sector somewhere on there, a huge file can sit on it and be corrupt, causing crashes/issues with that particular file.

Cool tip. Now what do I do to check for errors? I do updates and such as often as I can but I don't think thats what you are talking about.

What kind of hard drive do you have?
  • edited July 2010
Hmm, how do I check that? If I remember correctly I think it's kingston 500GB something.

Did you build this PC yourself or buy the whole thing pre-assembled?
  • edited July 2010
No I bought it from HP. It's btw a notebook if I didn't mention.

You didn't mention that I see.

What are the system specs? CPU, memory, etc.

Yeah, the model number would be very helpful :) On the bottom of your HP will be the full model number.

The model name is HP Pavillion dv7 notebook PC.
The problem is though, when I google the name the computer that comes up looks the same, same name and all, but other properties come up. Want me to list them? I can assure that they can manage most games on the market :P

The specs for yours would help, yes.

Specifically CPU, ram, and video subsystem.

On the bottom should be the EXACT model number, on a sticker. It should be something like DV7-3180us or something like that. That would help immensely :D

Windows own built in check disk utility should work fine, but you want to check both boxes "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" is not checked off by default.

Just find you C drive, right click, properties, tools, error checking, then check both those boxes....

It will tell you that you have to reboot, a DOS screen will come up and run the disk check, walk away for a while, it takes some time (make sure your laptop is plugged in).

If the tool finds errors it will repair them (if it can)

Yeah, I usually do that as often as possible. Will try it right away and then install BFME and see the results.

Good idea. I like Prime's diagnosis. Constantly sticking on downloads, in the same spot over and over. Seems like you might have a bad sector on the drive.

Alright. 200k files later steam seems to be able to get past the 24% lock! :D Weehoo! Will try installing BFME right away. I saw something called EA-portrait being treated so... I'm hoping that I can fully install it now.

Yes, BFME does work now. Haven't tried launching any skrimish but I think it will be alright.

Steam although. It is no longer stuck at 24%, it is instead stuck at 99%... What should I do now?
