re: Compacting in Outlook Express 6.0

I keep getting a message requesting that I compact the folders within Outlook Express.
If I say OK, it starts, but then has an error message "Cannot compact this folder because it is in use by Outlook Express" and dumps itself. Then starts over.
If I hit Cancel or Close, it just pops back up intermittently. This has been going on for a couple of weeks, and I don't want to pay Mr. Softy.
Any suggestions or solutions???
