I've haven't been involved with Linux for while. Whats a good Linux Distro for servers. I'm tired of looking at Windows all day so I want to pick up and learn something different.

I'm basically going to use it to test out some software and see if something I'd want to pursue.

K thanx.

I don't have any experience with setting up linux servers, but being an occasional ubuntu user I hang out on the forums a bit.

Most folks seem to favor Debian for a simple at home linux server.

I ran a Debian server for a couple years on some older hardware.

I compiled my own Apache, mySQL, and PHP. Ran Samba on it for internal file sharing. I found info on the net easy to digest and it walked me through all of that.

I know you've already made your choice, but I'll add my 2 cents anyway (as I am wont to do).

    * Debian is rock solid, but is sometimes slow to incorporate new software.
    * Ubuntu Server isn't bad, especially for a home server. Their packages are usually much more current and there tends to be a wider variety of packages available. I probably wouldn't run it on a production server though (or if I did, I'd use one of the LTS releases).
    * CentOS - When it comes down to it, most Linux shop run some sort of RedHat variant. CentOS is a community maintained fork of RedHat and is what we use on all our managed servers at work. It's probably the best free server RPM distro (IMHO)

I have Debian running as a VM. I'm still trying to get up to speed with using Linux.

I have heard of CentOS since I used to support a VoIP system that used CentOS.

Thanks for the input. I may take a look at each just to see what I prefer. Its all part of a sandbox anyway.
