Going RAID on my NF7-S. Please assist!

edited January 2004 in Hardware
Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a new HDD (same make/model) to set up a RAID 0 array with the one I have. After I get a hold of a PATA-to-SATA adapter (check here) I'm going to get to work. Before I actually do this, I need to know what the best BIOS/drivers are, as I know many of you have had better results particular ones (or so I've gathered)?

As for backing up all non-recoverable data, I will set up a routine whereas all unrecoverable files will be sent to another machine on the network, at least until I can get the cash to purchase another drive and do it locally.

Make sure both adapters are the same and the same revision. I have been using and liking the EQuito'ized bios 19 and had good luck with 14 also. Use the most current drivers from the S-M download page, 32/8 or 32/16 stripe/cluster and adjust the latency with Powerstrip. Getting it all set-up is much easier if you have an extra drive to work from when testing.

MUST the adapter be the same make/model? I thought in the end things went in under SATA spec, and PATA spec the other.

If that's the case, I need ABit's "Serillel" adapter. ABit has had the Serillel 2 adapter out for some time now, which may make finding the original much more difficult.

Yes, it really should be the same make/model. It won't be that hard to find an original "Serillel" adapter as the latest NF7-S's are still being shipped with it instead of the "2".

So it's a case of finding someone who is willing to give there's up for $30 shipped... including the SATA cable. That or wait for Newegg to get them back in stock, which I doubt will happen anytime soon.

I've got 2 SATA adapters that came with the NF7-S motherboards. Don't know about SATA cables, but the adapters are worth the most so they're what matter.

I opened them to just look at them.. otherwise brand-new, never used.

Anyway, just incase... I'd be happy to deal cheap with you (or anyone else) if needed :)

Well Madball just hooked me up with one, so now all I need is a SATA cable. Would you be able to part with one?

Sure, no problem. Just PM or email me :)

Is there any gains/losses by going with a particular cluster size? When playing with the latency, is there a possibility you'll lose the array, and all data permenantly?

Also, is there some quick guide around which describes how to go about building the array?
