Tracing of Attempted Identity Theft via ISP and MAC address

edited September 2010 in Hardware
I may have been the victim of someone attempting to open a credit card in my name on PayPal's website. I contacted the police who told me it is possible to get a warrant for PayPal's records and a warrant for the email addresses involved. From that, will they be able to find out exactly who, when, and where did this? What if the person was on a public internet connection? How long would it take if it's possible? Thanks!

I suggest you speak with a lawyer, because you will need one to get through this process and he may be able to refer you to technical people in the industry of getting this stuff done.

Identity theft is a federal felony. Please consult a lawyer, not an Internet forum.
