Recovering data off dying HD

edited September 2010 in Hardware
Hello,

I have a dying hard drive and I've been moving files away from it for a while now. For some reason (call it stupidity), this morning I used the Windows Cut and Paste operation to move files to a new drive. Then Murphy's law struck and I got an error writing to MFT of the dying drive at some very sensitive point. After booting up the computer again to resume copying, the directory I was in was completely empty (there were *a lot* of files and folders there).

What would be the optimal procedure to begin restoring files in the emptied directory? I know the data is still there ;)
