unlock thorton 2400+

edited January 2004 in Hardware
hi , i have unlocked the cache on the chip ( i have a Barton), now i wish to unlock the multiplyer so i can overclock without changing the fsb,(what is the barton3000 speed) im gonna aim fot that :)

Also what is the bridge that controls the fsb currently its set as 133 (DDR266) fsb , i want to change it to 166(DDR333)

will i have probs if i run my proc at 333 FSB and my ram at 266 , how far could ram be pushed, perhaps if i change thew timings i could get the ram @ 333 , i am gonna get some better ram when i got the money.

Seeing that your mobo is a KT400A chipset based board, you shouldn't have any problems overclocking the fsb speed of your board. I've never had a mobo with the KT400 series chipset so I don't know about it's ability to run the memory asynchronously with the fsb, but it should tell you in the manual if it allows you to. The 266 ddr you have is the main holdup on overclocking the fsb at the moment. That board should unlock the multiplier selection too on that Thorton as the proc has all the L1 bridges closed from the factory and shouldn't be hard locked if it's week of manufacture is week 37 or older. You always have that option for overclocking if the memory doesn't allow fsb overclocking.

ive had the cpu a while, i want the multi unlocked coz if i set the fsb of the processor 166 then i will have 15 x 166 = 2490 and that is a bit to far , so i will have to unlock the multi before i can enable the 166 fsb, i know the fsb mod is on L12 but can someone please explain how to unlock the multi and please provide pics if possible. :) i have asked a few times but people keep asking me qustions rather than providing me with an aswer, i know if i do this my cpu and ram fsb will be out of sync but i plan to get some DDR333 or 400 soon anyway, so it wont be for long and i could always pus h the ram to its max to give a slight boost. my board is a KT400 and has cpu support upto 333FSB and DDR400 (selected models details on site)

Why is that a bit too far???

    Check this out!!!

Here is the rest of the thread.

ok, maybe its not too far , but i still need to know how to unlock the multi :( wheres Eqito hell know.

i need the multi , as i cant change it in bios and when i push the fsb, the pci / agp go up as well so i think itll be safer to do it via the multi unlock and then in bios (which will allow if cpu is multi unlocked)

If it is a multiplier locked Thorton then, if I read what Equito said right in my thread, then you cant unlock the multiplier. However if it is an older Thorton, like mine and one of mtgoat's, then its already unlocked and you just use the dip switches on the board to change the multiplier.

I think thats right but somebody will correct me if i'm wrong.

:):):) i just did the L12 mod as well as the cache mod i did last night and switched the dips to 13x on on the M\B and now i have a 333FSB XP3000+ Barton for £50 :)

strange as well my temps have gone down to 33c now... i bet this would do 3200+ easy.

My M\B site in the bios section says XP3000+ no mention of a 3200+ is this as 3200+ only has 200 FSB (DDR400)

could my ddr266 run @ 333 ? , would be great if it could, as its not providing me with the bandwidth the cpu is now capable of :) , i dont want to break it doh.

Thanx again guys. :) oh look @ this

Deejayz, if I'm not mistaken, the KT400A chipset doesn't support a 400 fsb processor like the XP3200 because it doesn't have the requisite dividers to run the pci and agp busses in spec, so unless you like to severely overclock the pci and agp busses, a 200 fsb speed is out of the question.

When you bumped the fsb speed up to 166 in bios, did you change the speed your ram is running at from what is was set at on a 133 fsb? If you haven't changed it to run asynchronously from the fsb, then the ram is running on a 166 fsb also. As long as the ram doesn't give errors, I would say you are safe to run like that. I regularly run ddr past it's rated speed with no reliability problems on my rigs; I have some Crucial pc2100 ddr running at at 144 fsb and 2-2-2-6 timings on my KHA+ system right now and that ram is only rated for 133 fsb at Cas 2.5. I've had it as high as 160 fsb and Cas2 on that board also.

Good to Hear , all i did was mod L12 and set the dips to 13x to get XP3000+ and my Ram synced on its own , is it better to run in sync , i would av been gutted if i had to run my ram @ 266 , slower speed ram than the CPU FSB is bad right ?

could i just change the multi to get XP3200 with a 333 FSB :)

To check what speed the memory is running at just click the memory tab on CPU-Z.

Yes, its better to run the memory at the same fsb as the cpu i.e. synchronosly. Glad to see your thorton wasn't multiplier locked.

lol , sorry linked to the same image twice , fixed now. im gonna run some tests to see what scores i get and add them to here:

    Aquamark03: 34,648
    3DMark03 : 5,445
    PCMark04 :

dont know what i should get.

Yes, you can try upping the multiplier some more to get more speed out of your proc. Just watch your temps and check thoroughly for stability by running something like Folding at Home or Prime 95.
