sudden Works database error, please help

edited October 2010 in Science & Tech
I am not sure how to proceed with this error when I try to open a typical Works database I use regularly.
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000018). Click on OK to terminate the application.

I'm using Windows XP & Works 7 for years and haven't had any problems till lately.

I searched online for similar problems, they all seem to be outdated resolutions for older works versions like 4 or 5.0.

I downloaded and installed an update to Works 7 which changed nothing.
I then removed Works 7 using control panel and reinstalled my original version CD and updated the program accordingly but still get the same result.
We're networked so I tried to open the database from other computers and get the same result as well but I manage all of these computers myself, all XP all have Works 7 on them and they are all current on updates. I'm not sure if an update conflicted the works software or if in one of my scans I removed something that I shouldn't have or if somehow the database is just corrupted? Any tips or advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like the problem is with the database and not the software itself. I don't know of tools to fix it but you could at least troubleshoot the problem. Try to create a new database and see if you get the same or any error messages.

The most common way for a database to get corrupted is if the harddrive it's running on is damaged or if the computer it's on is crashing a lot.

No it couldn't be the database since I have the same works program on 3 computers and none of them can even create a new blank database without getting the same error. I found that works functions normally on all 3 machines but not anything to do with it's database features. I installed an older version of Works on 1 of my systems. (99 actually) and used it to open the database and then saved the database in the access format and then again saved the database as an excel spread sheet just to be safe. Removing 99 and the original installation of works created some issue with Acronis or maybe that was just an unfortunate coincidence on my part. Ultimately my copy of Acronis was somehow corrupted and started causing me to get the BSOD since about Tuesday. I couldn't repair the installation or remove it, I would get the error message that the set up files had been corrupted. I did system restore and tried to download the software but always get the same "corrupt" error message. I took the extra risk of toying with the Acronis files in my registry which only lead to catastrophic failure of my OS on this one machine. Luckily I keep all my data backed up to an isolated hard drive (i guess that's why I went ahead and took the risk anyway).
The good news: I did get my database info all converted and saved
The bad news: I couldn't repair or reinstall XP for some reason. I proceeded to wipe out the entire partition and install XP on the cleaned drive but cant' do that either. Every installation of XP fails for a different reason. The most recent installation was actually successful but upon restart I got this error "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA". Based on what I've researched it seems RAM has went bad? I just moved and have no idea where my memory test discs are so i have yet to confirm that. Am I chasing coincidental problems or creating my own problems? I've wiped out the original partition and am trying a fresh new installation of XP what else would cause me to get such an error?
