Forum Moderator is checking my ISP address

edited November 2010 in Science & Tech
I might mean IP address. I got a pm from a forum moderator, not here, warning me about using multiple logons and he listed them. I told him they were not mine. He argues they come from the same address. He is a punk and a know it all , but what would cause a fourm moderator to go to this extent to check out 1 persons ip address and not everyone's. This gives me the creeps.

There are a number of tools available to forum administrators to monitor who is using their site and how. It's trivially easy for me to look up IP addresses members have logged in from and know when someone is "sock puppeting" (using multiple accounts to simulate a conversation).

I guess it's creepy if you assumed you were anonymous on forums. From our perspective, it's protecting our communities. I suggest having a reasonable conversation with him/her and dropping the name-calling if you wish to continue participating there.

This is a pretty standard procedure for any forum administrator, as owning multiple accounts on one IP address is widely considered poor forum etiquette. There are many plugins for forums that identify these IP addresses automatically. If this discourages you, don't use multiple logins or consider the reasons why the administrator might think you have them.

Either way, this is best resolved with a rational discussion, not name-calling.

I think finding out some information before I would put someone on the spot would be a reasonable action, such as what i have doen here. I am not in the habit of calling anyone names. This individual has a habit of over reaching and I was concerned what prompted him to target my family. That being said, I do not care all that much as I have never been anything but civilized. However, this presented a learning opportunity for me to better understand the various interfaces. I realize, as I think most other posters do, that I am not anoymous and it is not an issue for me.

I appreciate such a quick response. I would certainly avoid the name :rockon:calling as you would suggest.

If you are connecting at a school campus or some other large organization. It's very possible there are multiple people there on the same forum as you all having the same IP, he may have sent out the same message to them as well.

That was the question I was going to ask: Where/how do you connect? Most schools would present the same IP for connections within the school (or at least, certain clients), so if you were at a large school or if the website was targeted towards a certain type of people (like cooks, or mechanics, or unix admins) then you'd up your chances of having the same IP for multiple accounts. I'd say just be nice and it shouldn't be a big deal.
