I have Win 7 installed on a Gateway PC. I found out that the PC is already maxed out Memory & CPU wise. To upgrade I need a whole knew board etc.
I contacted Windows Support and their answer was obtuse at best. Does anyone know if or how I can transfer the Win 7 licence to a new machine? If it can be done I'm going to go Linux on the Gateway.

What kind of license is it? OEM most likely since it is a Gateway (Win 7 came with the PC?).

If that is the case and you keep most of the other parts, then it will most likely activate fine. If you have to call Microsoft, you tell them you had to replace the motherboard, which you did, they will activate it.

If you added Windows 7 to the machine, your license type may be different.

No it came with OEM vista installed and I upgraded to Win 7. It was the limited 3 machine deal.

Ok, so that is a retail license then I think? Meaning that you own 3 copies of Windows 7, they can be on any 3 machines you want, as long as it is only 3 at a time.

I can't be 100% sure, but yes, moving your install shouldn't be a problem.
