Can I hook my TV up to my home theater without a receiver?

My TV has SPDIF out. My new home theater speakers connect with standard banana jacks in the wall behind the TV.

I just want to run the sound from the SPDIF port to the banana jacks. All my Google searching, and Yahoo asking is telling me that I have to get a $300 receiver which, while they certainly will do what I need, they also do a lot more. It seems like there should be a solution which does not require such a great expense.

Is there no such thing as an SPDIF to analog audio converter box?

There is such a thing. It's a receiver. You need to decode the digital audio and then have decent analog amps to drive your speakers.

The banana jacks are already hooked up to an amplifier? You can't have sound without amplification.
