Windows 7 won't start screensaver.

Hi Folks,

I have a Win 7 machine here that will not activate the screensaver after a certain amount of time. I assume that there's a process running which is preventing the screen saver from activating but I'm trying to find the best way of finding out exactly which one it is without going through the list and ending them one by one. Or better yet, if there was a way that I could just force it to lock after 10 minutes then that would be the best solution.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

just go into your properties and adjust how long the screen saver takes to turn on. The other possibility is that your power saving settings are turning the screen off before the screen saver turns on.

    Hi Kryyst,

Thanks for the reply, but the screen saver is set to come on after 10 minutes of inactivity, adjusting the time it takes to come on doesn't make any difference. The screen never sleeps as it's set not to.

The problem is that this is a work machine and like all of the others it's screen saver is set to "none" on 10 minutes with the box for "on resume display logon" checked. Unlike all of the others nothing happens after 10 minutes when in actual fact what should happen is that the PC locks requiring you to log in to get back into windows. None of this happens. Try it yourself and you'll see what I mean.

There's a process keeping the screen saver from activating. I need to find out what the easiest way is to find out exactly which one, or a way to force the screen saver to lock when it's supposed to.

If anyone has any ideas on how I can go about this without killing each process 1 at a time and waiting a minute to see if the screen saver activates or not I'd be very gratefull.

    Many thanks in advance.

Most processes won't prevent the screen saver from coming on even if they are running. The screen saver trip is supposed to be keyboard/mouse movement.

Couple things to try. First setup a screen saver and then just preview it and see if it stays on or shuts off on it's own.

Some things that could prevent the screen saver from coming on could be as simple as a wondering mouse.

You don't have a colleague next to you who's a like me do you? - A total fidget who can't sit still, perhaps they're rocking your desk ever so slightly and hence the mouse lol.

I take it there's no group policy settings overriding what you're trying to achieve? If it's on a domain does the same thing occur if you log on to the local machine?
