Cannot extend desktop to second monitor with Intel G41 Express Chipset

I have plugged a second monitor into my DVI port using a DVI to VGA adapter but when I try to extend the desktop to the second monitor, and press apply, it automatically deselect the "Extend..." box and greys out the second monitor.
the monitor itself is not responding at all, just an orange flashing light...
I am using a Intel G41 Express Chipset card.
Any help much appreciated.

    Make sure you are running the latest drivers (here). If that doesn't solve your problem, give us some details about your system (operating system, updated other drivers/windows files, monitors you are using), and we can go from there. Welcome to Icrontic!

    Thank you very much Tushon. I have switched cables and am now using a DVI cable and not the DVI to VDA adaptor with a VGA cable and it is working fine. The adapter must have been faulty.

    DVI to VGA

    might be DVI-D which wont out put analog signal

    if is DVI-A it will
