South Korea struggles with gaming addicts

edited January 2004 in Science & Tech
Looks like the online gamers of South Korea need to un-plug for a while.

[blockquote]Concerns over growing illicit trade in cyber items, as well as health fears over the length of time young people spend on games, have driven the government to draft regulations to cope with the darker side of South Korea's appetite for online gaming. [/blockquote]

If the government would try to make money off this like state governments here in the US make money off casino gambling, I'm sure they would suddenly not have a problem with it.

    Thats funny stuff.
I dont see the online gaming here as a problem. But if someone one did it would be because it is everywhere. And I mean everywhere. There is the 24hr game channel on tv, they have tournements on it and huge crowds show up for these tournements.

The people pride themselves on thier gaming, the younger generation more so (under 25). They also hosted the world cyber games here, the president of south korea showed up for the opening ceremony. Need I say more.

The cost of a PC baang is 1,000won an hour, or $1.11 canadian or $0.84 us
All the latest games are installed and best of all you have full control over the system with the ability to install anything you want (dammit i need to hit them up and install folding). Oh and you can smoke. LOL
Below is a pic of one of the 50 or more pc baangs that are no more then 15 minute walk from my house

South korea is the home of 24hour lan gaming.
Whole groups of highschool boys have counter strike games all the time.
In the first month I arrived, before I got a monitor and case, psu for my machine, I spent allot of time in those pc Baangs
