PC Won't pick Up IP Address

edited December 2010 in Science & Tech
Hi

I have two PC's that are connected with wires using a D-link router.
On my first PC I can connet to the internet. My second PC won't allow me to connect to the Internet anymore.

When I type in ipconfig into my first PC it comes up with my IP address etc. When typing the same command into the second PC it comes up with zeros where my IP address should be. I have tried the various different commands i,e ipconfig renew, ipconfig release etc, none of which reset my IP address.

Can anyone help with this problem,

Regards
Robbo

Try changing ports on the router, ensure that the wire is firmly in on both ends, see if there are any blinking lights on both the port in the router your second PC is plugged into and on the back of the PC itself where you are plugging into the ethernet port.

If those are all good, you might want to try updating the driver for the device. Look in Device Manager and under the network adapters section, grab the model number and google the company's website for drivers (for example, realtek 8116C). After installing, do a ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew in an elevated command prompt (if using Vista/7). Let me know if that stuff doesn't do it. You should also try power cycling the router at some point in this process and restarting your computer.
