I realize this probably has already been asked multiple times (Link?) but……….

Tired of trying to whip out working sketches with Paint, etc so would like a very inexpensive drawing software that is easy to use but can get the job done. I have experience with AutoBad Rev 12 (DOS based!!) but have been away from the field for quiet a while.

Going to claim NOOB on this so your help is appreciated.

    http://www.osalt.com/autocad

This has 3 Open Source alternatives for AutoCAD. Might want to start there. I don't really know much about CAD though.

Not as easy to use, but Google Sketchup will draw in 3D as well.

And I've seen some people do pretty amazing things with Sketchup.

Depends what you are doing, for 2D drafting just about anything will work, osalts suggested Qcad/Archimedes are both decent in my experience and I've heard good things about Draftsight.

As far as pay for apps, I do like BricsCAD but I'm not sure what you regard as a 'cheap' CAD app.

Of course if you're a student/teacher/lecturer you can sign up for autodesk's freebies.

I use AutoCAD every day at work and never get to screw around with things I want to draw. I'll have to check out some of these CAD programs.
