I'm currently folding this p1028_FSnat_337_GS ...earlier I was crunching along using 3Dnow! boost because of horrible weather/temps/humidity we had since the weekend began. Anyway I began crunching this wu and I noticed while surfing it was taking like 16:30 per frame so I began watching it closely and the fastest I could get was 15:30 out of it once I stopped teh surf.

Well since temps are cooling down now for the next few days I decided to kick in some SSE and see what kind of difference it would make.

Now crunching 7:00 per frame ...that's more than twice a fast and my temps have only gone up 1C.

Anyhow ...earlier today I ordered 3 new TT SFII's and a generic 3.5 rheobus for this summerl If all pans out ok I may even go wc. :fold:

recap:

that's
p1028_FSnat_337_GS = 51.4 points
3Dnow boost! = 15:30
Extra SSE boost OK! = 7:00

Chris, when you want to go wc, give me a call and I'll help you out. I have some experience with watercooling, with my Asus dually.

EDIT: Yeah, I know what you mean about the weather; I've been having to run the window unit in the computer room constantly the last 3 days or so.

Thanks for the offer I was planning on asking you for help there! I've been looking at the whitewater block ...why does it have 3 nipples (bad gene pool maybe)?

Yeah man we had tornado's like a mile south of here big time ...that's what you've been seeing on the news. I woke up at 1:30 am and stayed awake the rest of the night just listening for "trains"! LOL

I think the whitewater injects the cool water into the middle nipple and then discharges through the 2 side nipples for less back pressure plus the way the block is designed with the water chamber going to both sides of the intake. "Bad gene pool", huh! ;D It's a nice looking waterblock for sure and Danny at Dtek is good folks to deal with. I'm using one of his radiator/shroud combo's on my dually and it handles the heat well from 2 overclocked 1700's which are each dumping better than 80 watts of heat into the system.

Well I'm considering the Dtek kit Flowmaster XT with whitewater just not sure which pump to go with ...the eheim 1250 or the hydor L-30 (I imagine both are noisey but I am trying to overcome the vantec tornado noise @ 55db).
Also ...while we're on the subject "ehem" :topic: (my fault) ...one of my biggest concerns is condensation ...what prevents condensation on these wc systems? Also ...how much of a power supply (I eventually may cool gpu and nb also)?

Yeah, actually on my Barton I run BOTH assembly and SSE and get times about 2\3 the normal without SSE on all the new Gromacs WUs. Might try a triple entry on Bartons and up, see what it does (--advmethods -forceasm -forcesse). Linux\Intel P4 likes NO -forceasm better (I run one each, and Linux has been Intel skewed for so long that it still runs better on Intel with stock drivers, so my one-each pair of boxes lets me study this kind of thing empirically while getting email client in that does not run the windows viruses and those viruses also do not know what a Linux box does to forward email as they do not grok Linux code at all well, so simply I do not forward email either-- I text quote what I want to pass on).

No condensation will ever happen with a wc system Chris unless you use below ambient water in the loop. No need for a powersupply in a wc loop either. The only thing that needs power is the pump which gets power from either mains or is relayed to the PC psu. Block(s), pump, radiator with fan(s), tubing, and MAYBE hoseclamps is all you need. If you decide to use more than one block, i would recommend a Eheim pump and a radiator that can use 2X120mm fans. Another recommendation is to use the same size of the fittings of the parts. 3/8 of an inch OD or 1/2 inch OD (which i recommend). Obviously, if you use 1/2 inch OD fittings, you need 1/2 inch ID tubing.

    What Mack said!

The Eheim 1250 is kind of a big pump and I don't know how big your case is. You should be able to see it at 1 of the pet places in Lafayette though, but don't buy from them as they will rip your eyes out with inflated prices. :-/ If you also plan to go with a nb and gpu block, I'd definitely recommend the 1250 though as it puts out good pressure and flow rate for a hobby pump. It's also real quiet; the only way I know it's on is to put my hand on the case because it adds a very small amount of vibration to the case. I didn't rubber mount though and even this vibration would go away if I'd put down a small amount of silicone seal on the mounting surface first. One thing I haven't gotten around to doing yet (too lazy) is to put a pilot light on the pump so that I have a visual reminder that the pump is on. I got the light but just haven't gotten around to doing it.

That kit looks nice, but it has a few things I would rather instead in it. I would either go with Tygon or Eheim's tubing myself. I know the quality of the Eheim tubing personally and I've read that the Tygon is the ultimate tubing, but expensive.

BTW, the ac is off and the window is now open; the cold front finally made it through! i even lit off a fire in the fireplace to heat the living room this morning.

Thanks Mac & Mudd for the advice on wc ...Ageek I'll have to try more setting sometimes.

I am currently using a lian li 6085b which is about the size of the 6089 or basically a typical mid size lian li case. If I need to go with a larger case it might delay the project a while longer than I expect because of budget restraints. If possible I'd like to begin with this case and only the cpu block and build from there ...and when I add more blocks I can get the bigger case and an additional radiator. Is that workable?

What about coolant ...should I use it?
  • edited January 2004
It would be hard to put it in that case internally. What do you think of buying a cheap matx case and modding it to hold the radiator and pump? It wouldn't mess your expensive Lian Li up that way; all you would need to do is to cut 2 holes for the tubing in the back and I have a 1/2" knockout cutter to make nice clean holes.

EDIT: For quick disconnecting and connecting the external box, you can use this coupler, from Eheim . I have them with both my Eheim filters on my fish tanks and they are full opening ball valves. Here's a pic of it:

    cheap matx case?
I've see some wc cases that resemble squat lian li cases ...I figured I could maybe get a black one of those and use it ...is that a matx case?

edit: omg $169.95 for this sumbiatch? That's about what I payed for my case in the first place but it would look great!

matx case+ micro-atx case. Newegg has a cheapo Codgen for $20 Plus $10 shipping that could be modded with no problems and you would have enough room for radiator, fans and pump and reservoir(if you want one).
