SSL/TLS with Thunderbird and Avast

Hi Guys,
I have recently got round to converting my AV from Avira to Avast but when I launch Thunderbird I get a warning that the SSL/TLS encryption prevents avast from checking my emails.
I assume that the SSL/TLS is like some sort of handshake that prevents applications intercepting your email acount user name and password and thus with it switched on Avast can not access your email.
If I turn SSL/TLS off in Thunderbird then Avast can access it but I am concerned that there is no security now when my email is accessed
Avast does say that it will encrypt passwords before they are sent so again, my assuption is that the data is sent unsecure between Thunderbird and Avast but that Avast applies the the security before sending it on to the outside world?
Is my logic correct?
Cheers
Rich

PC rebooted again and i got bsod saving the registry hive was borked. Used vista disk to try and repair but that opted to do system restore to before avast was installed. manually ran chkdsk C: /f /r and rebooted again. installed avast and it started hanging again but this appears to be fixed by a restart.
touch wood its now up and running... though i do have some concerns over my HD. will have to see how it behaves!
thanks for your answer above!
