well that specific error messags is saying that it understands that the .tar file is an archived file (like a zip, rar etc..) but it doesn't know how to get into it to scan it.

There's really now way to fix that error.

do you know a program that is free and available to use without having to buy it first that can scan and fix errors in the registry?

That error is not registry related. Avira is saying it can't open the file, to scan it, and given it's path, it doesn't matter. See if there is an option to ignore archives or something like that.

If your registry question is an unrelated question then a program called ccleaner. It'll go through and clean your registry, which really is all most registry errors stem from.

However as Tushon said this problem with your av has nothing to do with your registry. Your av software can't scan the tar file. Usually though it should just skip over it and continue on. Then at the end of the scan it'll give you a report saying 0 viruses found 10 files unscanable or something like that.
