Reloaded WinXp media edition on a friend's PC. Her software and licence. OEM version. First time I loaded it, it failed to load the Networking module, not protocols, no icon, nothing. Ethernet was there and working properly. Repair didn't do anything so reinstalled. This time the Network module is there and I can get on the internet etc. However, now the shut down module doesn't work. The button's there but when you click you don't get the options of shutdown, reboot etc. If you just click the button it brings up an error message about a problem with Windows Explorer....send to MS, if you click on either, send or don't send it shuts down Windows Explorer then immediately reactivates it. I can shut down using Task Manager. I've found several fixes on the internet but none of them work. Is there anyway to restore the shutdown module without reinstalling everything again?

If it's had problems like this twice in a row, it is not a windows issue, and you should not be trying to fix an OS that's patently broken. It could be a bum disc, a bad HDD or crappy RAM, but it ain't Windows.

I am thinking bum disc, I used my straight up Win XP Pro and it installed fine, but wouldn't take her licence. Guess I have to start rummaging in my pile of old stuff or call in a favour.

It appears it was bum disc or discs. I tested the HDD and the memory and they both passed. I ended up slipstreaming both the MCE discs onto 1 DVD and reinstalled again and everything worked.

I had a customer with a compaq multimedia PC using winXP Media Center... it kept on having issues. Installed normal WinXP and it's been fine for 3 years.
