It seems that Samsung is now pre-loading at least some of their computers with commercial key-logging software.

Make sure to read the 2nd article in the series... wherein their support supervisor apparently admits that they pre-loaded the key logging software on their laptops. I know one manufacturer that I won't be buying a computer from any time soon.

Thats why my machines always get a wipe with clean install. WTF

Edit: updates say VIPRE misidentified the software.

The second article, in combination with the later discovery of the false positive, really makes me wonder WTF is going on. Someone at Samsung admits to something seriously wrong (and likely highly illegal) they didn't actually do? Weird.

lol... It makes me wonder if the false positive caused them to admit to something that's buried deeper in the system (a hardware keylogger would be nearly undetectable without ripping apart the system, and not circumvented by a software reinstall).

:mean: Hey, Samsung! I found this crap on my system! You guys are teh ebil!
:hair: Oh crap! Umm... Yeah... You got us. We've put them in there, but we haven't activated anything. Sorry.
    :mean: Oh Snap! False alarm.

It's still hilarious that customer service did confirm that they shipped StarLogger for things like usage tracking.

    Someone's fired.

I'm wondering if it was one of two things that generated that "admission":

    1) An acknowledgement that since it was on the laptop, it must have shipped from Samsung, and the admission was just that "damn, I guess we MUST have shipped that" or

    2) They use it internally for testing and QA and somebody thought it must have gotten out into the production run by accident

Who knows. Not too concerned about it.
