We had a board meeting today, which felt relatively grown up and mature. We had it at a nice asian restaurant, and there was food, drinks and coffee. Carl held a nice presentation, showing the progress of the company, and we discussed and voted about various details on where to go and what to do. The most relevant parts for Minecraft is that we decided to bring in bug fixing into the development method in a more clear way so that people working customer support can add them as tasks for us, and that we finally set a release date for Minecraft.

It’s a bit tricky to really do a release for Minecraft as we keep updating it all the time. For one, the version we deem as the “full version” won’t be very different at all from what the game was like a week ago, and we’ll keep adding features after the release as well, so it’s really more of a milestone when we finally get rid of the Beta label, and some kind of goal for us to work towards. The plan is to be open with this and try to get people to cheer us on as much as possible, but to be open with the fact that the game won’t change much at the actual release day. (It’s more a progress up until that point)

We picked November 11, with the unofficial tagline “us too”.

It’s the same date as a few other games and movies, and the one I’m the most excited about is Skyrim, so that will be a nice reward for me if we actually manage to hit that date!

And, in case you want an update on Minecraft:

We’ve been working on finishing up Achievements and Statistics for 1.5, I ran into some issues with JSON, got frustrated, and added weather instead. Developing new features like that is what I enjoy doing the most, so I ended up covering a lot of ground. There’s periodic downfall (snow in snowy areas, rain in others, nothing in deserts) that make the sky darker, hides the sun, moon and stars, and makes everything wet. Ice grows back in cold regions, and snowfall covers the ground when it’s snowing. During rain/snow, there can be occasional thunderstorms with lightning. I haven’t finished the actual lightning bolt yet, but everything else is fairly done.
Once the stats are done and the weather has been tested through, we’ll release 1.5. I’m guessing this will be next week. The piston mod might get added, but it will not be in time for 1.5.

The most relevant part is that they decided to incorporate what they should have been incorporating in their development from day one.

    I'm unimpressed by this announcement.

I can honestly understand his motivation for what he's been doing though. Especially since this isn't following a typical development cycle. Sure, it'll be nice to see bug fixes, but they did what they needed first: a feature freeze.

I've been saying this for a long time. Notch has really pissed me off in how sloppy his priorities have been with Minecraft. There have been so many bugs since beta, including horrible performance on many different types of machines. And now, with the latest update, there's some serious bugs that require players to log in/log out just to be able to see each other or read signs - and this is something that has to be done very frequently, not just once per login.

I might not be so angry if they were actually dishing out good features and content of a semi-regular basis, but that isn't the case anymore either. Sure, we've gotten a few cool new things like dogs (and more bugs to go with), but what on Earth are they really doing with their time over there?

I know Notch keeps talking about the achievements and stats that he's been working so diligently on... Really? Achievements? Holy balls, the only way he could be more efficient at wasting his time would be to not do anything at all.

Funny how because it's a $5 game that keeps getting updates, people get pissed about it, but if it was a $5 game that was just released and left, people would just... stop playing.

I mean, surely we've gotten our money's worth out of it. Surely he has the right to work on his game however he wants to, right?

I don't think it's been $5 since the early Alpha days. I got it during Beta and it cost about $23. Most software doesn't have a price tag in the first place until it goes gold.

I think we're pissed not about the updates, but because we bought it during Beta, and the point of Beta testing is to FIX BUGS. Until now, instead of fixing the identified bugs, the developers have simply added features. That doesn't jive with the standard development cycle.

I agree 100%, I understand 0% of complaining about having access to a game that is continuously being updated. If there are any of the blaring bugs when it "Releases" on Nov 11th then I can understand complaints. It was made very clear when you purchased the game that you are buying it as is. If you wanted a finished game you should simply wait until it is finished to play/buy it.

You are a Beta tester at this point, you have the right to report bugs (and they have made it very easy to do so) not complain about them.

the standard development cycle doesn't work for everyone. What matters is results if you ask me.
