so about 3 days ago i started having this issue when i opened firefox 3.6 my hard drive access would start going nuts
i ran malwarebytes and spybot and avast and came up with nothing. spybot did find some cookie trackers but that was about it.
even when i closed firefox my hd was still going crazy but only started when i opened it.
i did have a lot of saved tabs.
i hadn't made any changes to firefox for months. no new plugins or addons

i closed all my tabs and cleared my cache and upgraded to firefox 4
the problem seems to have stopped but it also stopped temporarily 2 days ago as well so i don't know for sure if this is going to happen again or not.

one thing that i did note is that my firewall comodo was having an unusual amount of outgoing connections but those were mainly from avast.

the only thing i can think of is i had some windows updates happening the about 3 days ago that would have made any changes to my system.

anyone else having this problem in the last few days or anyone have any idea whats going on?

Suggest getting a paid-for anti-virus: Malwarebyte's Antimalware Paid version, or Eset might be worth getting a trial version of, and http://housecall.trendmicro.com will do free scanning Trendmicro's way.

I am suggesting these options en-mass because no one AV is perfect.

Activity may be due to the saving of those many open tabs to disk or switching them back from paging if they went down. The upgrade to Firefox 4 probably helped. Just my two cents. I had similar issues with both 3.6.x and some with 4.x (I recently switched to Chrome .... traitor)

i thought so too but the problem persisted even after i closed all my tabs
i'm also leaning towards that it might be comodo firewall.

because the problem just occured again and cmdagent.exe was jumped to the top of the internet activity list. i then clicked on "stop all traffic" in comodo and the problem went away after i restarted traffic a minute later.

    all three programs.
comodo, avast, and win update have had updates installed in the last 3 days now that i think of it.

when avastsvc.exe is at the top spot even with a ton of outbound connections i am not actually noticing any significant hd accessing.

Yeah I've used Opera also. It was nice too.

okay the problem is still persisting and i do believe it is my firewall
because everytime i do have comodo restrict all firewall traffic the problem ceases within 10 to 20 seconds
and when i restart traffic it does not occur

    basically these are the steps.
    1) turn on computer no problems
    2) all firewall/av/spyware software loads along with a few other presets
    3) i start firefox
    4) hard drive usage goes up

and i notice that the only program that is running when this is occuring and not when it isnt is cmdagent.exe which is a comodo application.

now that i seem to have it be controlled via traffic shut off it's time to do a clean install of comodo.
