Windows XP wont complete installation, i've tried everything..

Well about 4 nights ago my SATA drive, well the OSon it (Windows XP Home) started acting funny, up until that point folders containing .AVI files would crash explorer, then on that night the task bar became un-responsive altogether. So i thought "Okay, system restore..." didn't work so i then tried a fresh install, wouldn't detect SATA drive.

Any way i am now trying a normal IDE drive.. I have the CD rom as the boot device and the HDD set as secondary, even though in the startup list the HDD appears as the master (when it's actually set to slave) and the CD Rom is set to slave, when it should be the other way around. Moving on... Whenever i install Windows it gets to the "Rebooting machine..." then it does so, comes back to the "Press any key to continue....." and that's it, nothing happens it just stays there. The HDD works fine as i have tested it on my friends computer.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte 770T-D3L. Ever since i got it, it seems to prefer that i use SATA instead of IDE. It did come with a blue 80 pin IDE cable, but i thought that was causing the problem so i started to use a40 pin. Could this be the problem? I don't want to figure that i fixed it in BIOS then re-install Windows trying to use the 80 pin (it's currently installed onto my friends computer which i am using at the moment)

Another factor to consider is that my graphics card heats up a lot, the fan wont even spin on it even more, i remember when installing XP onto the SATA my computer would shut down half way through the install. I don't have any other working grahics cards though but i mean if it's not even getting past the "Press any key....." then how can that be the problem?

Comuter tech told me to clear my BIOS, which at least is now working but, as i said, i have this constant thing where it wont get to the 39 minute installation thing.

Can anybody help me please? If you need more info just ask :)

Thanks for the help and sorry if there are typo's in this thread, my keyboard is crap lol.
