Unknown Disk

edited June 2011 in Science & Tech
Hi, hope someone has the right stuff for me.

I have Meccer AL-096 laptop that I formatted c: for no reason except I was told its time to do so. Now Trying to re-install windows XP home edition from original recue disk is giving me huge headaches. I can only get as far as selecting the drive to install on. The problem is that in the block there is only a "Unknown disk" with the message below saying there is no disk in this drive.

If I press enter it goes to a BSOD. I followed advice from previous blogs and ran Memtest86 and Drive Fitness Test. Both came out with no errors.

The system has a 160gig HDD that is partitioned to 20Gig and 149Gig. The person who's great idea it was to format told me to remove BIOS battery to reset BIOS so that was done, I think I made the same mistake twice by listening to wrong advice!
Someone with some more savvy please help!

Ok now I have diffrent question.

In the Bios there was option to Enhanced or Disabled for : ATA Control Mode. This was set to Enhanced and the dependent on this there is a next menu: AHCI Configuration, with the same options as above. I Disabled the AHCI Configuration and kept the ATA Control Mode on Enhanced.

Now everything works again, but I would like to know what did I do and is this the right way?
