    might try the guide we have here: http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/
    or

    more generally, you probably have a bad/failing HDD and should get a SATA to USB kit (~$20) and backup any data onto another computer before stressing your HDD through the likes of DFT/manufacturer's test (look at the actual HDD and see if it is Seagate, Samsung, WD, etc). You may also wish to test your RAM with Memtest 86+ (both of these are available on UBCD.

    I really don't have anything on the drive thats needs to be saved. I have tried the cd but it won't even attempt to access it.

    It comes on with the windows xp startup page and the another page flashes on to fast to read then goes to a screen that says;

    intel r boot agent fr v4.1.10
    initializing and establishing linc

    pxe e61 media test failure check cable
    pxe m0f exiting intel boot agent

    then a screen appears that in short says try again and gives several options like safe mode normal etc. but no matter what i try i come up with the same result.

    I'm sure it has something to do with trying to upgrade the chipset and it went haywire.

    Okay. If you don't need to backup anything, double-check the BIOS settings and make sure that your CD is listed first in boot order. For Toshiba, it could be F2, F12 or DEL to do a temporary boot from CD. You may want to download any other bootable CD and make sure that it works, ruling out that your Windows XP cd is bad itself.

    thanks for your reply

    I have already tried that (fyi for this toshiba you have to hold esc and power until you hear beep then hit f1) I have two other systems and I have tried the cd in both and it works. I think that the chipset ( north and south bridge) is corrupt. Is there any way that I can reinstall the chipset without using windows. I think that the motherboard is from Intel. I am assuming that the chipset is installed at mfg. Like I said befor I think I have just converted a laptop into a small boat anchor. I should tell you that this is a Toshiba Satellite A45-S120 and not worth what it would cost to take it to a comp tech who would charge about $135 to look at it.

    Thanks for your help and thoughts.

    I think there is a hardware problem underlying this, and you might be wasting your money :/

    Good luck!
