Mic not working

I started having a problem with my Mic not picking up my voice. It has been working perfectly, but the last couple days it stopped working. The catch... it will pick up the sound from my headphones (its a headset) but it wont pick up the sound from my voice an inch away. Any ideas?

    And when i log into a Ventrilo channel I get an error message that says, " Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device. DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed. HR=DSERR_NODRIVER.

    What type of headset (brand/model)?
