Ad-hoc network cannot connect ot the internet.

Hi all!

I'll try to avoid confusion, but I'm a little confused myself.

I have one computer connected to the internet through a LAN-cable. Let's call this computer "Multicom". I have another computer (we can call it Asus) that I want connected to the internet too. The problem is I only have one LAN socket in the wall, so only one computer connected at a time. OK, Google is your friend, and I found out that making an ad-hoc connection would be perfect. From what I understand, "Multicom" would use it's wireless adapter to make a wireless network connection that other computers, like "Asus" could connect to. I followed a guide to make the connection, and I enabled the option to let other computers connect to the internet through "Multicom"'s wired connection.

The problem is that when "Asus" connects to the ad-hoc connection, it can't acces the internet. It just says "No internet access". Do I need to share more connections, or did I do anything wrong during setup? Are there other options to connect "Asus" to the internet?

I hope this wasn't too confusing.

    router, switch, or wireless AP.

yes a wireless router or switch would be the easiest option. But pending that you need to bridge the connections on Multicom.

Ok, I know what a wireless router is, but not quite sure about the switch. Is that the kind of box where one cable goes from the wall to the box, and then one cable to each of the machines? Like a wired router?

So there is absolutely no way to connect both machines to the internet with my current setup?

You can do it but ad-hoc networks and internet sharing between computers can get flaky and generally everything needs to stay up all the time that is doing the actual sharing. You can buy the cheapest switch you can find and it will work.

Kind of. A switch is network hardware that allows multiple devices to talk to each other without being directly connected. It handles sending and receiving data packet traffic over ethernet, mainly that medium now. A router is one kind of a switch.

But basically if you only have one data jack and you need more plug that one jack into a switch and then everything else can plug into the switch and still have network access that is not using another computer's network connection.

Ok, I'm not quite sure I understand, so I drew a picture. Will this kind of configuration give both computers access to the internet? (see attachment)

Just to verify, is this what I want?

That will work but it will require you to have a LAN cable from your laptop to the switch to have internet access.
