VGA to HDMI

Hey guys, I just bought a VGA to HDMI cable and I need to connect my laptop to my TV. I don't need it to have sound and I don't need superb quality. I just need to be able to see what I see on my laptop on my TV. I have the cable and I've connected it but the TV doesn't get a signal yet. I'm assuming this is because VGA is analog. Anyway, is there a way for me to force the laptop to output something to the VGA? Would this setup work at all?

Running Win 7 Home

Your laptop might have a function key to switch outputs. If it doesn't, win + P will bring up a menu inside windows to change outputs. Also, closing the cover of the laptop might make it output to whatever else is available. I'm guessing you already played around with the screen resolution options?

Tried all three. Still no luck.

pretty sure you can't go analog->digital, only the other way (as in your laptop had HDMI out and your TV has VGA in)

It can be done, just not as cheaply as a single cable. A quick google search provided this handy site: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10114. They're a lot less expensive than when I looked a couple years ago. Buyer reviews seem do be pretty decent. I know the site is good - I've made several purchases through them.

I'd be surprised if your TV didn't have a VGA input that you can run a straight VGA cable from your laptop to your TV.

What does your cable look like? Sounds like the cable is the issue.

It might very well be the lack of HDCP information from the vga port. If you can disable inside the tv the need to encrypt and authenticate the signal, you may be able to get the display working. However, not all tvs have the ability to turn off this "feature", leaving you stuck without a true converter.
